APRIL SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS RECAP & MAY PREDICTIONS

Hey homies! Welcome back to… 🥁 drumroll please 🥁… your April Trends Recap!!! This month was full of trend-setting pop culture moments, pranks, memes, and tortured poets (us included!). Grab your favorite bevvy, we recommend @olipop 😉🥤, and let’s dive in.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #1: APRIL FOOLS DAY

The April Fools trends were on an entirely new level this year - where do we begin?? To start, pickles have been a HOT topic lately and it was solidified on April 1st with a handful of brands teasing new pickle flavored products. Two of our favorites were Grillo’s Pickles x Califia Creamer (ew?) and Rayvi’s pickle flavored mineral mix. We were shocked by the amount of individuals that actually wanted these flavors - would you try it? 👀

Another iconic collaboration that the homies were obsessing over was Olipop x Pringles. The Pringles logo photoshopped onto one of their soda cans as a teaser? Genius. Groundbreaking. Iconic. Olipop’s marketing team deserves major props, so we will continue to sing their praises & take notes. 👑

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #2: JOJO SIWA

Ummmm…? Where to begin with this? In case you missed it, JoJo Siwa is in the middle of a ✨rebrand✨ and it’s giving… Taylor Swift circa 2017? You may have heard, seen, or participated in the viral trend of an interview Siwa did, claiming no one in her generation has made “this dramatic of a change yet” (the homies did it here),  and the internet was QUICK to turn this into a trending audio.

An honorable mention must be made for her custom wrapped car, exclusively featuring her face on every inch. While she isn’t really the first to make a switch this dramatic, we applaud her (& her team) for the amount of effort that went into this rebrand from the car, the daily IG teasers, all the way up to the shocking music video launch. Whether you are a JoJo Siwa fan or not, this campaign got people talking, including individuals beyond her target demographic. There’s no such thing as bad press, right? 🫣

In case you missed it, JoJo Siwa was also featured on an episode of Call Her Daddy (which went viral as well) and Waterboy hopped on the trend fast & gained a TON of followersfrom it! Big props to Jenna Palek, Waterboy’s SMM,  for leveraging their product in this unique way and speaking to their audience & reaching new accounts!!

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #3: TOTAL ECLIPSE OF OUR HEARTS

We saw tonssss of brands (like Jeni’s Ice Cream) capitalize on the April 8th eclipse in their social strategy & we were SO impressed. 👏 Not only was this a great opportunity for brands to gain traction through on-trend visibility, but it shows that brands are actually having fun on socials and will take opportunities like this and turn them into a way to connect with their community.

Mark your calendars, the next total solar eclipse is August 23, 2044. See you there 🫡

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #4: COACHELLA BILLBOARDS

From Sabrina Carpenter to Tyler the Creator and Ice Spice, we saw a handful of stand-out billboards from this year’s Coachella lineup, some of which made it to the social trends circle. The first (and best execution) that we saw of these billboard remakes was Arizona Tea, see below. 🥤

Aside from these eye catching billboards, one of the artists, Sabrina Carpenter, released a new song just days before her opening Coachella set that hit the charts hard and stole our hearts. Her new single, Espresso, is extremely catchy and has quickly become a trending audio on both Tiktok & Instagram, so use it while you can! ☕️ The overall theme of the music video (and the core of Sabrina’s iconic girly look) ties in sunkissed colorways & retro fashion, something we noticed becoming more and more of a trend earlier this year.

SOCIAL MEDIA TREND #5: TTPD

It’s only been a Fortnight (😉) since The Tortured Poets Department released and Taylor has already broken several records within the music industry with this new album. The Tortured Poets Department teasers had small moments of virality, so we were anxiously awaiting the release of the album both for the music and for the social opportunities to come out of it.

Various social accounts were changing their profile photos black and white, applying TTPD teasers to their social strategies, and connecting with their audiences on this launch. We knew the memes would start to roll in as soon as the album was released, and we want it on the record that these social teams ATE the TTPD campaigns. One of our favorite remakes was Olipop’s album cover where they changed the song titles to fit their brand. Guilty as Sip?, But Oli I Love Him, & I Can Fizz Him (No Really I Can)...like?!?! Give this girl a RAISE!!!

An unexpected account to join in on this trend was Scrub Daddy and they absolutely blew it out of the water. This one was unexpected because participating in trends like this can feel very Gen Z, where Scrub Daddy’s typical content seems to be catering more towards the millennial-aged group. We applaud them for making this jump & potentially connecting with a new demographic that they maybe wouldn’t have before (like us!). Making this initial connection with a new demographic (especially the dedicated fanbase that swifties are 🤪) peaks interest and can potentially lead to new, loyal followers and customers. But really, whether swifties or not, not taking advantage of this highly-anticipated likely once-in-a-lifetime album release is missing out on a huge opportunity business-wise.

MAY PREDICTIONS

The forecast is in! We can expect to see continued use of TTPD content through May, as well as long-form video content, Met Gala memes, & AI developments in the Meta suite.
